About The North Face

Just like any other brand The North Face have devoted a lot of time, energy and money into the research and development of new fabrics, technologies and innovative ideas in weight reduction, increased performance, durability and a whole host of other ideas which will, in tern, benefit you the customer and help you in all your outdoor endeavors.

As an official North Face retailer we thought that it might be nice to pass on a few bits of info about The North Face and the ways in which they achieve production of their high performance clothing, footwear and bags. We'll try to breakdown a few of the North Face proprietary fabrics and make them slightly more easy to digest. Well that's the idea anyway!

The North Face are one of the nations favorite outdoor brands and everywhere you look you can see The North Face logo bobbing around whether you're at the beach, in the city or on the mountain. They have achieved this by keeping in touch with both technical and aesthetic elements of outdoor gear which entails updating colour ways each season, sponsoring major events and keeping in touch with what you guys need to keep you dry, warm and comfortable.

The North Face not only use their own technologies, they integrate others into their outerwear and these generally consist of Gore-Tex and Polartec Fleece. These two partnered brands enable North Face to extend their product range and produce gear which can take you from street to summit, no problem.

Fabric Collaboration

Gore-Tex

Gore-Tex are at the front of the queue when it comes to keeping you dry and they are very good at what they do which is why The North Face use them in products ranging from jackets to footwear. Gore-Tex provides reliable, durable protection against the weather and the marriage of North Face with Gore-Tex gives us items which will keep you dry, warm and looking good wherever you are.

Polartec

Polartec are the insulation giants and all North Face fleeces have been constructed from Polartec since 2009. Polartec also have developed fabrics such as Power Stretch, Wind Pro, Thermal Pro and Power Dry. Each of these fabrics have their own specific use and have been integrated into North Face products which has enabled items to be perfect for certain conditions, altitudes and activities.

Proprietary North Face Technologies

Now Moving on to The North Face technologies, these are fabrics and technologies which have been developed by North Face alone and are unique to their products.

Hyvent

Hyvent is North Face's waterproof and breathable fabric. North Face Hyvent uses a 3 layer PU coating formula and each layer contributes towards waterproofing, moisture permeability and durability. The minimum level of breathability achieved from Hyvent is 600 g / m2 / 24 hours. Hyvent enables North Face jackets, gloves and trousers to be low in weight, waterproof and breathable. All of these properties combine to keep you out in the elements longer than others.

DWR

DWR - This stands for Durable Water Resistant. DWR is an added coating to the exterior of the product which helps give longer life to waterproof technologies. It also helps with 'beading' which means that when rain or snow lands on your North face jacket it can run off the surface more easily and increasing the rate of moisture permeability of the garment.

Apex Soft Shell Fabric

Apex Soft Shell Fabric - This was a soft shell breakthrough and enabled the combination of fleece and outer shell to be combined into one allowing for performance and comfort to be made into one garment. Apex technology is built to stretch for comfort and mobility and is treated with The North Face DWR. Apex Soft Shell is specially balanced between weather resistance and breathability but it also has the benefit of being windproof to a rating of 20 CFM which makes any North Face garment with Apex technology incorporated into it ideal for dry to damp, cold conditions. Perfect for our fickle weather.

Windwall Fabrics

Windwall Fabrics are North Face's answer to windproof fleeces and they are very successful in achieving these goals. The Windwall Technology uses a unique fabric bonding process that allows only a tiny amount of external air to penetrate the fleece. This reduces the sometimes devastating effects of windchill and enhances the the users warmth and comfort. The North Face Windwall 1 fleeces use a mesh liner whereas the Windwall 2 use a fleece liner for even greater insulation.
