The Mountain Equipment Xero 550 sleeping bag is a full 3 season bag, but as part of Mountain Equipment's new lightweight Xero range weighs in at less than a kilo.  An anatomical hood and and EXL elasticated lining keep the bag snug in use, with special attention given to neck baffle and toe foot where most heat escapes. As you'd expect the Xero 550 features double ended zips for improved venting and a 5 Baffle Bulls-Eye Foot Piece which allows the down to loft more effectively even under pressure. The 3 dimensional neck baffle pulls in tightly and combines with the anatomically designed hood to maximise comfort and eliminate heat loss in the most vulnerable areas.

Box wall construction and Mountain Equipment's new He30.rs fabric keep the weight down, whilst the 93/7 ratio of pure Hungarian Down keeps insulation levels up to 3 season levels. Ideally suited for moving light the Xero 550 compresses down to less than 8 litres, yet the elasticated stitching in the upper half allows the bag to maintain a figure hugging shape.

Fit Tip

The Mountain Equipment Xero range of sleeping bags are fairly tight fitting and would suit someone with a slim to medium build. Someone with a larger build would find one of the Marmot bags more comfortable.

Features

  • 93/7 Hungarian Goose Down with a minimum fill power of 750
  • He30.rs shell fabric is exceptionally lightweight and highly breathable
  • Supersoft lining – our softest and lightest next-to-skin layer
  • EXL top lining improves loft, thermal efficiency and comfort
  • Supplied with ultra-light waterproof stuff sack and large mesh storage sack
  • Narrow box wall baffles hold down securely in place with minimum weight
  • Anatomical hood prevents cold spots around head
  • 3-Dimensional neck collar helps to prevent cold spots and heat loss around the neck
  • Bulls-Eye (5 baffle) foot piece and Shark’s Toe design to maximise loft
  • 3/4 length side zip with anti-snag baffle

Tech details

Weight: 950g / 34oz

750+ Fill Power

This down provides a very high level of warmth to weight keeping you warm without being heavy and bulky. Products made with 750+ fill power down will be extremely compressible ensuring they take up as little room as possible in your pack.

Sharks Toe Foot

- otherwise known as an angled foot box, Mountain Equipment use this in many of their down sleeping bags ranges and what it does is allow your feet to rest in a natural position without causing the sleeping bag to become taught. If the bag becomes taught then the down will not be allowed to loft properly and this will result in a loss of heat and insulation around your feet causing discomfort as nobody likes to have cold toes.

Rip Stop -

This is a lightweight nylon fabric with interwoven ripstop reinforcement threads in a crosshatch pattern. It is woven with a coarse, strong warp and filling yarns at intervals so that tears will not spread. Ripstop is used in construction of hot air balloons and yacht sails but in this case very effectively on outdoor clothing.

Box Walled Construction

- Down garments and equipment constructed using a box walled construction allows for an even distribution of down throughout, which eliminates cold spots, box walled construction is more commonly used in sleeping bags and expedition gear.

Great for D of E

6 of 7 people found this review useful
An excellent small pack sized sleeping bag. Ideal for 'Duke of Edinburgh' or similar expeditions where minimising is essential. The bag is well made and easily meets the 'comfort zone' temperature guidelines. A great investment.
