The North Face Fleece
The North Face Fleece covers a broad range of clothing which integrates different technologies, fabrics and styles that relate to all different weathers, activities and needs. The North Face generally use Polartec for the branded fleece garments and the North Face use Polartec because it's a quality fleece which resists pilling, fading and has great thermal properties.
Polartec Fleece is a world known maker of fleece and they have numerous levels of fleece which The North Face deploy in their jackets and tops. The fleece which is used most commonly is Polartec Classic which varies from a 100 weight to a 300 weight. The 100 weight fleece is used on products like the Glacier and heavier weights are used on slightly thicker fleece such as the Genesis Jacket or the Shadow Jacket. Polartec is well known for it's fantastic ability to resist pilling, or bobbling as we know it, it also holds it's shape and colour incredibly well, wash after wash. heat retention is also of the utmost importance as, usually, this is why you'd be wearing a fleece top. Polartec is warm, comfortable and lives for a long time. It's used as top layer in the Hard Face technology or can be used as an insulating mid layer with the Classic weights.
Within the fleece collection The North Face have windproof fleece, thermally efficient fleece, full zips, quarter zips, hoodies and technical fleece. The Full zip fleece are great for versatile users who are constantly putting them on, off and letting air in or zipping in the warmth. The quarter zips are great for users looking for a thermal pull on fleece with the benefit of being able to let some cold air in or keep the cold out but not have the full length zip that can get in the way of harnesses and backpacks.
Windproof fleece is a very popular fleece with the most notable North face version being the Windwall Fleece. Being windproof is a great bonus for a top layer that isn't a hard shell because it has a soft and comfortable feel but feels a lot warmer because the wind is not being allowed through. The wind blocking performance is created by a unique fabric bonding process that allows only a limited degree of air permeability through the fleece. This not only prevents nearly all the breeze from coming through the garment but it also allows for breathability when you start to heat up with increased exertion.
