Thermarest was born with the simple idea of giving people a better nights sleep outdoors. They achieved this by introducing the worlds first self inflating mattress and that idea was concieved while Jim Lea, one of the company directors, was gardening. Since then Thermarest have come on leaps and bounds in reducing weight, increasing warmth and comfort. Introductions to the Thermarest range such as the Trail Lite, Prolite, and Neoair have all been incredible successes in the camping world by completing what Thermarest set out do do.

There are a lot of outdoor enthusiasts that are having a brilliant nights sleep, even on the most uncomfortable terrain, thanks to what Thermarest have achieved and continue to achieve. This is because of their high standards of quality and innovation.

Thermarest started off in 1971 when 50,00 people were laid off from Boeing in Seattle and 3 friends decided that they would try and tap into the sleep mat market as there wasn't a comfortable mat on the market at the time. While gardening one day and kneeling on a mat one of the co-founders, Jim Lea, had an idea of adding foam between 2 pieces of air tight fabric to which was the beginnings of the worlds first self inflating mattress and the entrance of Thermarest onto the outdoor market. Since this discovery Thermarest have gone from strength to strength and have acquired a few companies and turned themselves into Cascade Designs, however Thermarest still operate with the same skill and determination to make sure that you can sleep longer and more comfortably in the outdoors.

Thermarest now focus on a range of accessories and mats all tailored and innovated perfectly for the outdoors and they include, mattresses, sleep systems and stuff sacks. Over the next few paragraphs we'll try to explain an expand on how Thermarest make their gear the way they do and some of the tech behind it.

Thermarest Mattresses

Over the past 40 years Thermarest have had time to develop and shape their products into what they feel the best categories for you, their customers. They have come up with 3 series and they are Fast and Light, Trek and Travel and Camp and Comfort.

The Fast and Light series is the Thermarest light and compact range of mattresses which allow you to experience unrivaled comfort without compromising on the integrity of the products. Thermarest have made sure that the Fast and Light gear packs smaller, weighs less and performs well so that fast paced, high octane alpinists, adventure racers and backpackers can all have a good, solid nights sleep. The Fast and Light series includes the NeoAir, Prolite and Z lite sleep mats.

The Thermarest Trek and Travel series offers greater comfort than the Fast and Light series however it still offers the lightweight versatility for you to go anywhere and do anything. Ideal for everyone who likes to get away from the usual hub of life and go backpacking, car camping or just a quick solution as opposed to the sofa. The Trek and Travel series features the Thermarest Trail, Trail Pro and RidgeRest.

Ahh the Camp and Comfort series, my favourite. Thermarest were thinking of me when they designed this category. Unrivaled comfort, softness and warmth from basically lightweight portable beds. These are more for the family campers, base camps and for those who a good nights sleep is imperative. Deluxe camping from Thermarest.

Sleep Systems

The Thermarest Sleep Systems products are the other bits you can add to your pack such as tech blankets, pillows, mattress covers and fitted sheets. All these are here to add to the already comfortable Thermarest products but if you want the little bit extra then these are the best. All the extras from the sleep systems have been designed to be low in weight, high in comfort and easy to pack so you don't even realise it's there, unlike a pillow you might take from home say.

Stuff Sacks

Thermarest stuff sacks are designed specially for thermarest sleep mats and they have developed them to fit each size and type of sleep mat. Thermarest have also developed the simply dry stuff sacks which are just for general use when the weather turns sour, or you want to cross a river the hard way.
